| Formalities Required for Civil Marriage in Greece
Application (the Municipality usually provides printed application Forms)
Birth Certificate
Solemn declaration according to Law 105 certifying that:
There is no impediment to the marriage of bride or bridegroom as these are stated in Articles 1350, 1351, 1352, 1354, 1356, 1357, 1360, of the Civil Code.
He/she is a resident of the Municipality of the Community where he/she is registered.
Whether this marriage will be his/her first, second, e.t.c.
For minors under 18 years of age a court decision is required.
Certificate of divorce, if there has been a previous church marriage for those who are separated, or an irrevocable court decision in the case of a previous civil marriage.
Foreigners must have a certificate from their Consulate in Greece, translated into Greek, to the effect that there is no impediment to their marriage.
Announcement of the forthcoming marriage in a daily newspaper (twice-once for each party). The person concerned must appear in person to file the application and pick up the license, bringing with him his identity card. At the wedding itself both bride and bridegroom must be accompanied by one witness of full age (who may be a relative) having with him/her his/her identity card.
According to the new law on equality, the bride and bridegroom are obliged to state before their marriage the surname that their children will bear. This may be the husband?s or the wife?s or even both names, but no more than two surnames are allowed. |
