| Navagio beach (Shipwreck)
The beach of Navagio is the most famous of Zakynthos beaches and one of the most famous of all the Greek beaches. It is the trademark of the island and has been photographed millions of times.
This superb beach is located in the eastern part of the island, close to the Anafotiria village. It was initially called Agios Georgios but the beach owns its new name to the shipwreck (in 1983) of a boat that transported illegal cigarettes; with the years the sand has completely surrounded the ship which looks as if it was emerging of it.
The remains of the ships can be seen in the middle of the large white sandy beach which has amazing turquoise and crystalline waters.
Huge vertical cliffs of white rocks are surrounding the place creating a unique and wonderful image.
To reach this paradise, one has to take a little boat from the small port of Porto Vromi. Those taxi-boats are leaving every hour and the trip is about 30 minutes.

Argassi beach and resort
Argasi Beach is located in the touristy resort of the same name, 5 kilometres from the capital of Zakynthos.
It is a long golden sandy beach that extends on a kilometre and offers a wide range of water sports facilities. The resort has many hotels, taverns, bars and shops.
The Marathonissi islet
This small and deserted islet is located opposite the coast of Limni Keriou and is full of verdant and rich vegetation. It has a beautiful beach with fine white sand and crystalline waters, which is part of the National Marine Park for it is one of the many beaches where the endangered sea turtle Caretta-Caretta goes and lays her eggs.
The beaches of the area of Vassilikos
Porto Zoro
This lovely sandy beach is located 17 kilometres from the capital of Zakynthos and has beautiful and clear waters. A couple of taverns and some rooms for rent can be found behind the beach. Rock formations of great beauty are emerging from the sea, opposite the beach.

Banana Beach
This long sandy beach has crystalline waters and is considered, by many, as one of the most beautiful beaches of the island of Zakynthos. A few beach bars are standing on the beach and propose sun beds and umbrellas.
Porto Roma
The beach if Porto Roma owns has been named like that in honour of the famous Zakynthian figure of Alexandros Romas. The beach is picturesque, quiet and unspoiled and has golden sandy and crystal-clear waters.
Gerakas
Considered as one of the most beautiful beautiful of the beaches of Zakynthos Island, the long sandy beach of Gerakas has wonderful crystalline turquoise waters and an unspoiled natural beauty preserved by the Greek and international legislation which protects the endangered sea turtle Caretta-Caretta. Gerakas is a real paradise empty of hotels, bars or restaurants.
An impressive and beautiful rocky formation embellishes the small bay of Gerakas.

Agios Nikolaos
The beach of Agios Nikolaos owns its name to the little chapel which stands on the left side end; this beach is smaller than but as beautiful as Banana Beach and has a restaurant and a bar.
Some sea sports facilities are available on Agios Nikolaos Beach as well as scuba diving courses.
Laganas beach and resort
The beach of Laganas is the most popular and developed beaches of Zakynthos. This 9 kilometres long sandy beach is 11 kilometres south of the capital of the island and has beautiful crystal-clear waters. Sun beds and umbrellas are covering the golden sand and many water sports facilities are proposed. Various beach bars, snack bars and taverns are boarding the beach.
Laganas Beach is protected by the Greek and international legislation as a birthplace of the endangered specie of sea turtle Caretta-Caretta and is part of the National Marine Park.
The little pine-clad islet of Agios Sostis, located opposite the beach of Laganas, and can be reached by a lovely wooden bridge.
The main road of Laganas is boarded by many restaurants, bars and touristy shops and, behind the road, various luxurious hotels with swimming pools and many other facilities can be found.
Kalamaki beach and resort
Located on the end of the eastern side of the bay of Laganas, 7 kilometres south of the capital of Zakynthos, Kalamaki is a small and crowded resort which has one of the most beautiful beaches of the island. The sandy beach is, like Laganas Beach, protected by the Greek and international legislation order as the habitat of the endangered sea turtle. Kalamaki, like Laganas, is part of the National Marine Park.
Impressive rocky formations are overlooking the beach and offering a superb panoramic view over the bay of Laganas.

Alykes and Alykanas
The area of Alykes is located 18 kilometres north-west of the capital of Zakynthos and took its name from the salt-pits (alykes in Greek) which are found behind the village of Alykes.
Those salt-pits were the main source of income and wealth of the islanders. A beautiful sandy beach can be found in Alykes, attracting many visitors by its fine sand and crystalline waters.
The main road passing through the settlement is boarded by a lot of restaurants, bars and touristy shops. Numerous accommodations are available in the area.
The coastal settlement of Alykanas is lying a couple of kilometres from Alykes and is less popular (and less crowded) than Alykes. It offers a beautiful sandy beach which is the continuation of Alykes Beach and has crystal-clear waters.
The whole area offers many archaeological sites of great importance and interest.

Limni Keriou beach
Keri is a small and quiet resort situated on a wonderful bay with golden sand and crystalline waters, in the southern part of Zakynthos.
A couple of taverns and cafe-bars are scattered along the bay which offers a wonderful view over the islet of Marathonissi.
The small picturesque port of Keri offers organised boat tours to the superb Blue Caves.
Tsilivi beach and resort
6 kilometres from the capital of Zakynthos is the recent resort of Tsilivi which attracts many visitors every year and is constantly developing.
Hotels, apartments and studios for rent, restaurants, bars, shops and taverns are available in the resort.
The popularity of Tsilivi is due to its long sandy beach which has clear waters and offers various sea sports facilities. |
