Alykes is situated 18 km northwest of Zakynthos.
The area took its name after the salt works (: alykes), which used to supply the whole island with salt. It's a well known resort with a beautiful long sandy beach which attracts many visitors during the summer.
The 16th c. monastery of St John the Baptist is nearby. Navagio (ship wreck) and Skinari with its spa cave and another blue cave with spectacular sun reflections with changing colors are beautiful areas close by worth visiting.
Alykes has a friendly, family atmosphere and is set in flat countryside, making it a good place for cycling - try going down the coast to Tragaki and Planos.
If you walk along the beach of Alykes you will come to Alykanas village. It's a traditional village centred on a church and a cluster of shops, surrounded by fertile plains and dotted with farms. Pale soft sand stretches almost as far as the eye can see and you can hire a pedal or windsurf.
